Our featured artist this month is Pennie Wolf who has been painting seriously for about 10 years.
Though she was an art major in high school, where she learned perspective and proportion from an incredible teacher, Bob Wilson, after graduation she became involved in live theater as a hobby and was in more than a hundred productions in California over a 25 year period during which time she was an actor, dancer, singer, director, costumer, set designer and did just about everything you can think of, except lighting. (You have to draw the line somewhere, right?” With seven years of classical vocal training, she can sing the gamete from opera to jazz. She has performed in all venues of theater from Shakespeare to outrageous comedy.
After moving to Malad Idaho in 2001 and a spending a few years renovating her 105 year old brick ranch house, she decided she would try her hand at painting. She got started by attending a Ken Spencer 3 day workshop offered at PAC. It was there that she met Karen Wardle who became both her friend and mentor. Pennie painted in Karen’s “paint as you go” class for a year or so and then started teaching at the art center after it was recognized that she was really good at painting animals. Her first class was on horses. She has since branched out to include portraits and landscapes.
Nine years ago she was offered a small house in Malad to use as a gallery/studio and started teaching there too.. She specializes in portraits of people and animals and, although she is capable of painting in the impressionistic style, she calls herself a “realist” as that is the kind of painting that she has loved since visiting the Los Angeles County Museum at the age of seven when they were hosting a Rembrandt exhibition. She remembers standing and looking at the paintings with tears running down her face because she had never seen anything so beautiful before. She works primarily in oils because, according to her, she “hasn’t had time to learn another medium”.
She is a prolific artist who has painted over 400 paintings in the past 9 years. She also loves painting landscapes with brilliant skys and moving water. She hopes you enjoy her work as much as she enjoys painting it.
Her pay-as-you-go class at PAC is Thursdays from 1 to 4 pm. Her students work from photographs they bring to class so each person is working on a different project at any given time. The only thing she doesn’t enjoy painting are still-lifes….though she is happy to help other painters with theirs.
She lives on a small ranch with her husband, John, two dogs, 8 horses, 25 head of breeding cows and a whole bunch of wild critters that pass through now and then. Her gallery is named “Singing Wolf”, located at 34 N. Main Street, Malad, Idaho and her contact number is 208 766 3121. Her mailing address is: P O Box 74, Malad, Idaho 83252. Her cell number is 208 766 3121, and e-mail: penniewolf@yahoo.com. If you are interested in learning how to paint in oils, and you want to meet some really great people, come paint with her on Thursday afternoons. She happily shares her own supplies with beginning students until they decide to buy there own.
